Welcome to NY News Feed
New York first. The world, every 15 minutes. NY News Feed puts the five boroughs at the center of the page and keeps the biggest stories from around the globe updating around the clock.
In a converted storefront on Main Street, four reporters share two long tables, a coffee machine and a police scanner that has not been switched off in three years.
They are part of a quiet movement. Across the country, small newsrooms funded by readers, foundations and local businesses are filling gaps left by the collapse of regional papers.
A different kind of business
The model is simple: cover what nobody else will. School board budgets. Zoning hearings. The slow negotiation over a new water treatment plant.
"People don't need us to tell them what happened in Washington," says the editor. "They need to know why their property tax bill went up."
What comes next
Whether these outlets can survive the next downturn remains an open question. But for now, the scanner is still on, and someone is still listening.
